Why Reptile Expos & Shows are Terrible

Today I recount my experiences at 7 years of exotic pet reptile events as both an attendee and a seller. Although I've seen and met many great people and animals at these shows, it seems most people ignore or try to hide the overwhelming amount of problems from a lack of quality control to pressuring people into impulse purchases using lies and plenty in between. What are your experiences - good or bad?

Do you have any pictures (good or bad) from reptile shows? Post them on Instagram and tag #GoHerpingExpo. I have many more pictures and experiences to share, and this way I can see and include yours. Leave your reptile expo stories here on the video too!

I don't know if it has been suggested to you or not, but you could do your own smaller expo. talk to your local masonic lodge, and speak to them about renting the space, the one where i live allows that for events. you can then set your own rules, review the merch of others as it is brought in, turn those away who are being abusive, and set a good example for those in the community, and expos in your area. if people see this, they will then begin attending your smaller expo, as they know you wont skip off quality over quantity and money, and show people what good animal husbandry is, clean breeding is, and provide quality animals for private collections or breeding programs.

What if those wild caught animals are how poor people in Africa stay alive? Should we not think of that side of the animal trade?

I've been to like...2 expos and one of the ones I went to, there was a 20 gallon tank with probably about 20+ normal african fat tail geckos shoved into it. Most were severely underweight and some had pencil thin tails. They were all horribly colored and sick looking :[ was so gross and sad.

I used to think that expos were a more trusted source to get reptiles at least as opposed to a pet store, but I had a negative experience getting a blue tongue skink baby and discovering that he had mites soon after I got him :( It was my first reptile and it was an ongoing nightmare for months trying to get rid of them and thinking they're gone for them to come back again. Felt so bad for the dude.

I'm sorry this kid is wrong in so many ways like the spider ball just because it has something wrong dont mean it should be killed I only have one eye born like this should I be killed to ! ?? This is not fair and animal with a problem can still make a great pet ! All he is doing is bashing on expos that's not fair to the real reptile lovers out there trying to educate others on these amazing creatures! I buy sell trade reptiles as a business I pay people for a reptile they cant keep or do not want and then I sell it once I'm positive it's in great shape the money Doesn't go for my fancy shoes or house or steak dinners it goes only to my reptile business in Hope's to one day have my own reptile shop so its almost non profit. This kid needs more education and less hate !

You should really encourage people to support their local animal supply shops instead of Amazon all the time... We have a couple here in Richmond, always nice to talk to people who actually know about what they are selling.

I used to sell foodstuffs at a farmers market where the exclusivity contract said we weren't allowed to compete with the prepared food venders. Turns out people were buying Peanut Butter, Honey Wheat Bread, and Jam from me to make some kickass sammiches. Ended up removing the peanut butter.

I heard that you quit going because you feared the Feeder Source guys were gonna whip your ass for talking shit about them? Is that true? You do make some good points about Repticons bullshit and allowing a monopoly with feeder source, and allowing that felon that you spoke of to continue to vend. Seems that they don't care that good vendors are not coming because they don't want to get their animals sick sitting up next to the crap imported from some third world country. You should have just had the nutts to call em by name.

Thankfully in New Brunswick the only reptile Expo around here doesn’t sell reptiles and instead teaches you about the different species of reptiles kept as pets and I think that’s a lot better than what seems to happen in America

To be honest one of my least favourite things in the expo are those stupid deli cups that they are stuck in Especially the crested geckos. They are crammed in those tiny stupid deli cups all day with no freedom to move around making them very unhealthy.

Lol your mad at people who flip reptiles , you sound insane you’ve done his very same thing . Just because a person hasn’t bred it has nothing to do with how well they know that animal species , maybe that particular animal. Lmao at first it’s terrible their n deli cups , and now it’s a problem if they leave the animals out . lol entirely too biased

Somebody convicted of a animal hate or abuse crime is one thing but you singling out felons owning animals is Hanis or being able to sell animals , buying a booth to sell reptiles should never in life ever have to require a screening and I’m far from a felon but if this is what your insinuating then you have a lot to learn about real life

The only time I've been to one overall a lot of the animals didn't really seem to be in the best condition and the two my friend bought (same seller) had mites, were sick, and ended up passing away not long after. My friend was a breeder himself but is taking a break/stopping due to going to out of state college so he is selling 6 geckos at an expo in march and that's prob the last time I'll go to one. It can be fun but overall just seeing the animals in such small containers makes me sad even if it is just temporary

So what Im getting from this is that most reptile expos are pretty great. But then there just have to be the ones where unethical and bad breeders manage to sell reptiles. I guess all reptile keepers and breeders can do is keep an eye out for the bad breeders and such and let other people know about them.

Sounds like you have a pretty skewed and bias to reptile shows based on small handful of specific shows you worked that didn't have proper regulations or you went in with forced perspective without asking any questions as to why they were doing something a specific way or if it was actually dangerous to the animal in some way.

I'm also in NC and have gone to Repticon twice. It was nice to look around. Some vendors were annoyed to speak to people or answer questions. Another vendor was selling a Kenyan Sand Boa but it appeared to actually be an Arabian. When I asked about it they seemed annoyed. Then there was the abundance of impulse purchases. At the same time, there were some incredibly kind vendors who love to speak to visitors and answer their questions.

I got my crested gecko from a pet store where we were told that the owner knows a bunch of breeders and that we'd have to wait for him to get one for us from one of them. We got the text that they have my gecko, went there and saw that he's absolutely tiny. Like, as we later found out over text, he was 1.5 months old at that time. I was told recently at a store I went to to get Pangea, that it's not common to sell geckos that young and it's kind of sad they did that, since they knew I was a person who has never owned any reptiles. Is this unusual or am I just overreacting?

This might be a American thing. I've been to 3 here in Germany and it's all perfect for the animals. The enclosures are secured, locked and of the same quality and size and better than what they need in captivity, honestly the enclosures were so good, I was jealous. No selling. Everytime I was there it was just education and exhibition. Even the big animals like Turtles, Iguanas and Pythons had HUGE enclosures, like 3x3x2 metre boxes with small windows to look into, thermometers every 50 cms. They would be taken out every 30 minutes on a rotation to show them off and for pictures. The only real criticism is that some animals might have been held together with other species. There were only two animals per such "box" but sometimes and iguana and a monitor, which I thought weird, but the guys handling the animals and enclosures seemed competent enough so maybe that was fine. I've been very critical when I went for the first time and the times after aswell, but that's like the worst criticism I had.

Reptile expos ... Auctioning off live animals in cramped deli containers...many stuck in contorted positions just to fit. Hmmmm.... I find them fascinating but at the same time I have to hold back some disgust for how the animal are treated. I go for the inverts. Seeing some freak with a table full of deli cups...each one with a tarantula eating a mouse. Not sure the point other than to put on a show. From a husbandry point of view it definitely wasn't in the best interest of any of the t's...and well..obv not in the mices best interest. And well...if you have ever smelled a monitors thrown up remains of a mouse you have an idea what is left in those deli cups by end of day.. One person's pet is another person's pets food. "Rescue" lol...a relative term and depending on which pet is getting fed to which. But yeah... I am sure there are lots of crazy stories about the happenings at these expos.

How do these guys think it's a good idea to not give the poor critters any water while they're in the delis? I know a lot of reptiles don't eat often, so I'm a little less worried about that but I'm pretty sure they need water regularly.

Expos and Trade shows are essentially coops of people who are salesmen first and aficionados second. If you really want to do good for exploited animals, try to get them from rescues. There are millions of abandoned pets all over the country, and they need humans, they can't go back to the wild because we have bred them to live with us. When things don't work out the pet pays the price. If you have lived in a city all your life and get relocated in the middle of the amazon rainforest, the chances of you surviving is close to none.

One thing I don't understand is why we see all these big reptile youtubers (Kaufman, Kenan, etc.) hanging out all chummy chummy with Tom Crutchfield who was literally convicted of illegal animal trafficking. These youtubers seem to be stand up guys so I have no idea why they would want to be associated with a crook like that...

From my personal experience, pet expos here i Poland, Europe are pretty good. There are actually not that many animals up for sale, there are more accessories and enclosure stuff. The expo is every month, lasts only one day so there aren’t any issues with reptiles staying for longer periods of time in plastic containers. All of the people I’ve met there are super knowledgeable and experienced, so I think that we’re good here. But I think that those expos should have more strict rules in general.

Tried to save a bearded from one of these, it was so bad. Metabolic bone desires to the point he had no front joints and his back legs were locked, gout, crystals in the joints. We did literally everything we could and ot wasn't enough. Oh and the breeder had 10+ male bearded dragons in the same tub

I really like one tarantula seller. They didn't push us to buy. Actually told us we need to have a set up before buying. Talked to us about proper care and housing. Gave us their card for when we are ready to buy.

Went to my first repticon a couple years back. i wish i knew beforehand that they were awful. spent about $100 on frogs. i was super excited because id been planning on getting those frogs for a long time. they all died within a month. $100 gone and i was heartbroken. shipping on amphibians is outrageous... no local breeders... guess i'm not getting frogs. :/ rip francis, meatball, and jabba. i did learn that scorpions glow under blacklight though. maybe i can eventually find a local scorpion lol.

I went to a reptile expo for the first time not too long ago. It was pretty cool, but all I could think about was "Wow, look at all these fantastic animals I can't afford/have." but I did get to hold a BCI Boa (If I remember correctly) and it was pretty awesome. My mom haaaaaates reptiles (for some reason) so the expo was the only way I could get my snakey fix. The thing I didn't like was someone was selling spider ball pythons, and someone else was selling a full-sized Anaconda. And this Anaconda was a mean one. It could've been just stressed out but it would snap at the odd passerby as they neared its tank.

I've been to expos all over the north east and i have never seen the type of environment your talking about. No monopolies on who can sell what. Most sellers have been knowledgeable. Some have been pushy but that happens at any marketplace. Most breeders are happy to talk to you about their animals and upfront about where they got their animals from.

Personally I know an amazing breeder who goes to expos (tokay's, halms, etc.), and take absolutely amazing care for his reptiles. I'm sure there are many cases that aren't like him though, and house them as you said.

I find this so interesting because the last time I went to a reptile expo/show it was back in the 90s and I don't recall there being any mites. Shoot, most of the creatures were in either full setups or those plastic critter containers that are rectangle with a handle and such. They also were so much more well fed and without stuck shed like the the pet shops had at the time.

Expos in Australia seem to do better. In my particular city, we only have expos once every two years, for two days. We have strict licensing, so we always know who we bought off and when, as it is all written down as per legal instructions for transfers of reptiles. Obviously being Australia, we don't have imported animals, but there are some states that allow licensed takers to catch and sell parasite free wild animals as per the law, though it is strict, so most reptiles are captive bred. Overall, Aussie expos are really fun and safe to go to, you just gotta watch out for the heat!

Yeah reptile expos are fuckin weird.. and I mean Jesus you hit the nail on the head with the fact that they really do target impulse buyers. The first and last expo I ever went to, I brought my roommate with, he disappeared to go to the restroom and returned back with a very sick and injured Degu that he got for $5 from a suuuuper sketchy “rescue” that claimed he would be the easiest pet he’d ever have. They had a lot of animals, none of which looked the least bit healthy, and tried to do whatever they could to get you to leave their table with one of their sick animals. They were not the only sellers I saw with questionable tactics and even more questionable looking animals. First and last reptile expo experience.

You know, this really helped me. I have been wanting to go to a reptile show for a LOOOONG time now for the experience and to maybe find a good deal on my first lizard. I've just started my collection with a Royal, and I plan to expand into Hognoses and Bull Snakes. It's good to know that if I go, I need to be cautious of these people!!! So thanks for your advice!! :)

Edit: Yes I know Hognoses and Bull Snakes aren't lizards. I'm not sure what kind of lizard I would get to start off. I reaaaally want a monitor but I don't think that would be wise to start with. :(

Great video, if just a little bit exaggerated. Most of my experience going to expos has been great. There's definitely been the 1 vendor with poor looking animals. And earlier this month when I went to my local expo there was someone selling baby turtles that were definitely under 4inches. And witnessed him sell one to a little girl, saying it could live the rest of its first year in a critter keeper. 🤦‍♀️ That poor poor turtle. But those experiences are still few and far in between.

I’ve been to one. Plan on going back soon to see what it’s like. It was soooo crowded. Parents with baby carriages and little kids pointing out every single gecko morph on the table. You couldn’t walk. I was just going to get live feeders for a picky snake and find a centipede. But I was kinda sad to see so many animals being sold by people that really seemed to be in it for the money. Don’t understand how a $10,000 ball python morph occurs otherwise. And just seeing people holding baby alligator snappers knowing well they have no idea what they’re holding and considering buying it. But it was really fun to see as an enthusiast, just wish it was a little more exclusive I guess. It’s not a zoo to bring your kids to.
