Seems like you've had unfortunate experiences with exotic vets, so I wanted to share one very good experience I had (keeping in mind that I am Canadian, so experiences might be a bit different). I have a red-headed slider. A couple years ago, one of his back legs got crushed in an accident. It was really awful, the leg was swollen to 3 times it's normal size and was so discolored it was almost black. I rushed him to a nearby vet. They saw him right away, checked out his leg using x-rays, stabilized it, and provided me with pain killers and antibiotics (injections they taught me to safely administer). This first visit, meds included, cost me 300 dollars. I brought him in for checkups almost weekly for three months after the incident, and for each checkup I was never charged a cent. They were wonderful, and my turtle made a full recovery. This vet clinic is one that's associated with a vet school, and I'm sure that's partially why I didnt spend more on this, but the care was top notch. Dont get discouraged from the expenses. Take time to look around- there might be a vet clinic like this near you too.

I’m 26 Me and my daughter want a snake, I could by one, I could get all the stuff, I could provide for it BUT it’s not in my budget and I live with my mum and my 2 younger adult brothers and my 2yo cousin and Share a room with my 5yo daughter so I don’t have the room and life schedule for a snake. I have a cat she is easy she eats and sleeps and is cranky bum and she is vaccinated and gets taken to the vet but she is costly her food is $50 a bag (special diet from Vet) I don’t think it’s smart to get a snake till I move out and get my own place again and my life back into a routine. I want one but I know to wait. 💖 also if electricity bill goes up any higher my mum will kill me. 😅

What I really appreciate about your channel, and in videos like these, is that your level headed. You openly admit, "Yo shit happens. Reptiles just die sometimes." I know a lot of people feel bad and others will often tell them they did something wrong so it's nice to hear someone kist speak some life truths. My betta was 3 years old, I know he had an excellent setup, but he just died one day. An aquatics store worker tried telling me it HAD to have been something I'd done wrong, but in truth the fish just died. I had a cat suddenly die in his sleep from a freak kidney failure years ago. Shit happens. Don't feel bad if you gave it your best. Anyways, I'm rambling, I just really appreciat that aspect of your videos.

I honestly hate most vets. My current vet and I have a STRONG understanding that I know my shit, I know what my pets need, and I refuse to have my chain yanked. He treats me good and he gets my business. But most vets drive me up a fuggin wall.

Hey GoHerping! I know you feel really strongly about Petsmart and Petco and I used to agree with you. I started working for Petsmart as a dog trainer but since I own reptiles I was also trained for the pet care areas. I can tell you from experience that every employee there cares about the animals and provides exceptional care for the animals while there in our store. If they get sick or come in sick we take them off the sales floor and put them in isolation tanks and take them to the vet and don’t sell them until they are healthy. We recently got in a TINY crested gecko and even though he’s healthy, we are keeping him until he’s big enough to be sold. I know lots of the issues with chain pet stores is the distributor or where the animals come from, and if they send us sick or dying animals we will call them to report it, refuse payment for the animal (so they lose money and don’t want to send us sick animals) and we will stop buying from them if it keeps happening. Long story short, it’s time to stop viewing chain stores as the enemy. We all care about animals and we do right by them.

I work at a vet and I hate whenever we have people come in with an expensive breed of dog but then can’t afford the bills and complain about it, same with people who buy puppies

if you can't afford to rehabilitate a rescue animal than you probably shouldn't. it would be better to try and find someone else that can rehabilitate the animal and has the funds to do so

I agree with you 100% with vets they're all just money grabbing and will tell you anything to get you back as often as they can just for cash i was all set to become one and thats what stopped me and they put it down to paying vet school and opening their own practice its got to be payed for and then they get into the money more than the animals

I took my gecko to the local semi-exotic vet and they told me she had MBD, I had cared for her perfectly and I knew they were wrong. I took her to another exotic vet who told me exactly what was wrong and how to treat her-it was not MBD and it really angered me

Damn is Petco and Petsmart that evil? Men that sucks. I'm from Europe. And I bought my snake with a breeder. And that's what you should do actually...

It's just fraud. I won't give a euro to this persons. I just don't really trust anyone. And I'm not rich. I have enough for me and my snake for a very good, healthy life, and that's all that counts to me. Maybe it's selfish but I don't care.

As someone whose dreamt of having a bird and is very interested in reptiles now in thanks to videos like yours, it's difficult but I have to accept that I can't go out of my way to take care of another life if I can't take care of myself; mental health is just as important as physical and needs to be, at least, manageable enough before dedicating yourself to a task so long term.

I work at a vet clinic and it’s not just the veterinarians themselves racking up the prices, it’s the companies that own the testing equipment and that run the lab tests that ask for a lot of money to do those tests. It always hurts to tell someone that their total for the treatment we did is $6000 or when people have to sign an AMA form or have to euthanize their animal because they don’t have enough money. But on the other hand, having a pet is a luxury, ya know? I get both sides of it, for sure. And you’re right, technicians are really underpaid. PSA: if you have a cat or dog, get pet insurance (unsure if there is pet insurance for exotics).

This is like asking people on the street: I want a Ferrari, can everyone chip in to buy me one? Thank you lollllll

501c3's are about $3000 to start. Can confirm. There are reasons to do a nonprofit to start, such as fundraising. Also most animal controls will only works with 501 rescues.

I agree. No point in fundraising for animals you can't afford. That lets me know that if your animal gets sick, you will just let it die. People act weird when I take my hamsters to the vet. It's my pet and my financial responsibility to take them in when they are sick!

I have a question on reptaid, because I accidentally gave her way to much and I don’t what to do will it be fine and just skip a day or 2 of reptaid, she is sick right now

I work at a locally owned pet store (we have like 5 total locations in my area) and im happy to say that we truly take great care of our animals and inform people the best we can about them, but we still get people who come in to get a parakeet and a tiny cage or a betta and a like 2gal bowl/tank with no heater or filter. 🙁

I only used go fund me once, to help with paying for my heart surgery, I got about $200 and I was happy with the help. :)

when i was a child i took my dog and brother's dog to the vet for a skin disease of some sort and they put them down.

Maybe I'm just jaded and cynical but whenever I hear someone taking in an animal they "couldn't say no to" without the proper funds/setup/etc to care for them, I don't see "good hearted rescuer," I see "potential animal hoarder."

the issue I have is so many people will crowd source buying a reptile as a pet, but if you cant afford to buy the pet I doubt you can afford to take care of it properly. Like, I get crowd sourcing a nice enclosure or upgrading your setup, especially if you have a following based around your reptiles, but not just GETTING the pet.

I had a ginnie pig and it had a severe eye infection and it would cost 800 dollars to remove the eye, we just gave him anti biotic which was 100 dollars and took care of him till he passed away. Sometimes its hard to let go, but we couldn't afford 800 dollars for eye removal and apparently eye infection is connected to there lungs also being infected, so to spend 800 when he might die still regardless. Interesting the antibiotic and feeding him dandelions gave him about month more of life. Yet his companion is thriving and still with us. I feel like hes got a healthier immune system. We just have him with out a companion cause we did buy another gunnie pig and he died after only having him for 2 or 3 months. So gerald is lonely but doing well and we have no plans to buy more ginnie pigs in the future.

And who knows if some of these people are honest people!

People who ask for money for a new reptile because they ‘don’t have enough money’ shouldn’t be getting reptiles in the first place. They need to be able to take care of their own reptile for years on end and taking care of any life, and making that life happy is ✨expensive✨ so why should you even help someone buy a reptile if they can’t take care of it with their own money? it’ll just make them think it’s even more okay.

Swollen limbs can likely indicate gout. I have unfortunately bought two geckos with gout when I was younger. Happens from either a high protein diet or persistent dehydration. It's usually the latter.

People buy a £50 pet and fail to realise it’s at least £400 alone for just the setup, then there’s the maintaining of the animal. I’ve spent over £1000 just on the setups for my two reptiles and wouldn’t imagine asking anyone for extra money. You should always be sure you can afford everything first, then decide wether to get the animal or not.

In the end of the day, you can't save them all, so saving one is still better than saving none..... and if you purchase a leo from petsmart, or you don't... the chances of that leo selling are still very high. So they will replace that option regardless. It's inevitable at that point when it comes to leo's specifically. They will sell as they are just so popular. I myself have "rescued" a Leo from petsmart that was clearly neglected with missing toes on his right front foot.. Best thing I did buying anything from petsmart. He's the sweetest gecko and it's like he knew I saved him and upgraded him to a mansion. Within the first day or 2 he was already super comfortable with me. I don't know how or why but this little guy was beyond special. I have had many a lizards in my life but this guy is his own little character and the only big box pet I ever purchased. Trust me that Although I see your point... and with some unique pets I would agree with you... a leo on the other hand is going to be bought anyway so if you are that passionate about the animal's well being, I see nothing wrong with "saving" that specific animal. A company like petsmart is going to resupply leopard geckos regardless of how often they sell. It's inevitable with that species and that company.

After learning about how to take care of leopard geckos, I bought my first two from Pet Smart, because I was worried the pandemic conditions would harm them because bored, stupid people would just buy them without educating themselves first. I feel like if you have to save up for an animal you don’t have enough to continue to care for it. If any of my animals are suddenly sick/injured/need something I can likely afford it and not be affected very much. The money that I generally save just because you should save money is not for my animals but it can be if it has to be. Obviously a sudden huge vet bill is hard for anyone but if you don’t have any of it you shouldn’t have an animal

I went over my max with my rodents and finally managed to re-home two of my mice and it was such a release. Just getting rid of two tiny animals made all the difference. Me and my two remaining mice are all much better off
