Am I Neglecting My Bearded Dragon in this Poor Enclosure?

[animal resources, products I use and more: goherping.com]
Today I go over my adult male bearded dragon, Stan and why he's in a 36 inch enclosure with almost nothing in it. I then go over many examples where reptile and amphibian husbandry is best when it doesn't follow the norm or standard including leopard geckos with deformities, bearded dragons with stuck shed, a rat snake with temperature preferences and more.

I remember my dear Red had to be in a 20 gallon tank because she would flip over on her back and couldn't get herself back up, so she had very minimal setup. It was what worked best for her and her body, and she was okay for the 4 years she was with us. She ended up dying of a respiratory infection (probably from the flipping over), but I would do everything all again if I could

As someone with a blind, and surely neuroatypical dog, I agree so much with this. She responds best with nonverbal communication, as talking gets her too hyped up, I make a lot of hand contact with her. And since she's blind and high energy, I don't want her poking herself on my fingers, I touch her with the palm of my hand, where my palm meets my fingers. She's seven and we've gotten very comfortable with each other and can interact with very little force. And when she's calm, she communicates by a gentile nose touch, too. She's verbal when she gets too excited and that can be stressful for her. So what's a simple communication of "Don't run into that wall" people see as me smacking my poor dog. They don't see the better part of a decade learning touch with the delicacy of a calligrapher's stroke. I suppose its good for people to speak up when they see an issue, but we should all be gracious with the benefit of the doubt when disabilities are involved.

I have this situation going on right now but with a guinea pig. She has severe pneumonia so she’s in a small cage to quarantine for the next 3 weeks so my other pig doesn’t catch it. As much as I want her in the big cage, I have to keep her in the small cage to keep her healthy and monitor her. But if I post it anywhere or show her in the small cage it’s “why would you put her in that cage, why not put her in the big cage with the other one” etc. but it’s what’s best for her so I have to do it

So, i was wondering. Is it true that you can't keep 2 beardies in the same enclosure? I have 2 beardies, but they live together in 1 enclosure. I read somewhere that they'll fight till death if they live together. Is that true?😳
  • Haru Doné
    Haru Doné
Its true that keeping 2 together is a huge risk. Some keepers have done it successfully but they are the exception not the rule. In general dragons are territorial and theres always the risk of a mauling or even cannibalizing one. It can also cause constant stress which causes all sorts of problems. If its a male/female pair its possible the male may over breed the female making her extremely sick and the stress of the mating itself doesn't help. Plus if you aren't careful the hatchlings end up going to people who end up either intentionally or unintentionally neglect the dragon and cause it to get sick or die. Dragons living together may do a behavior called stacking, where one dragon sits ontop of the other. This looks cute and all that and people say "oh look they love each other". In reality the dragon on top is using the lower one as a basking spot and taking most if not all the heat and uv resources and the lower one gets pretty much nothing. The problem is usually that keepers are human. Humans as a species are social. Dragons on the other hand are not social but people often times can't comprehend feeling okay or potentially even happy living alone, so they force two dragons together to be "friends" when in reality its more like shoving someone into a locked room with a guy who is a known cannibal and he can clearly hurt and/or eat you at an any moment if he stops tolerating you.

Stop using solid substrate like tile and carpet! It’s very bad for there joints! Impaction is only caused by improper lighting and if you use really bad substrate like pure calcisand. Only time solid should be used is if it’s a handy cap animal or a short quarantine.
  • Nighting Gale
    Nighting Gale
@Haru Doné for some reason I can’t link anything in USmuchs comments, but google “does loose substrate cause impaction reptifiles” and read the first article that comes up. It addresses joint issues and Reptifiles is a very reputable source. The How Not To Slay The Dragon Facebook group and Advancing Herpetological Husbandry Facebook group are also worth joining, I’m sure the experienced keepers there have more input on the topic.

@Haru Doné “Solid Substrate Isn’t As Safe As You Think It Is Some people prefer to avoid sand, bioactive, or any other kind of loose substrate because they don’t want to take the “risk”. Well, I’ve got some bad news for you: Solid substrates aren’t as safe as you think they are. They come with their own set of risks, and these risks can’t be mitigated as easily as just making sure your husbandry parameters are correct: Reptile carpet harbor bacteria and can rip out claws or break toes. Paper towels can be shredded and ingested, which may lead to impaction. Ink from newsprint contains VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and may also dye the reptile’s skin/scales. Linoleum and shelf liner off-gas VOCs when heated. Slate tile is significantly harder than natural sand or soil, and may cause joint damage. Avoiding loose, naturalistic substrates in favor of avoiding substrate impaction without actually changing anything else about your husbandry is like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. It might make you feel a bit better, but it’s not addressing the actual problem, and the reptile will probably still get sick - just not with impaction.” -The biodude

I Have 4 Dragons! One of them his name is ziggy he has Severe MBD. He was 6 months when we got him he didn't even have the strength to even eat a Cricket. When he walked he would army crawl because his bones in his arms are Curved and had no strength to even lift his head 😢 We gave him baby food and calcium for a few months before he was able to eat bugs. Anyways He Moves a Lot now, still weird arms and can only jump a lil bit. I have a T-shirt in his cage that leads up to the Hammock we have so he can successful crawl up and down it! He LOVES His Hammock! Lol To bad i Cant send you pics of him!

I have a ton of handicapped animals, but the one that really comes to mind is my guinea pig Pucci. He’s blind in one eye and has a head tilt and teeth issues so we’ve had to switch to baby food and critical care over hay because it’s much easier for him to chew. Handicapped animals are a lot of work but they’re also so sweet and grateful. If we hadn’t adopted him from the shelter he would’ve been put down

My bearded dragon which is a rescue she has MBD she was left on a shelf in PetSmart. As soon as she came home with us she instantly fell in love with my cats and I understand that cats could be a safety issue but as soon as she doesn't see her cats or at least one of them she goes off of food completely and her favorite thing in the world is honey so I'll use honey to get her back onto her food but she'll go off of it if she doesn't see her cat. I personally think it's adorable because my cats love her.

@Goherping just keep the heat balb about 100 -150 watt He looks great but im concerned with the black beard has he been to the vet ? It could be cause he is 10 yrs old why his beard stays black but sometimes It can be parasites in the stool causing stress on him or new environments is also upgrade him to a 75 gallon he needs more room IF HE IS OK TO WALK AROUND MORE DUE TO DISABILITY and add a temperature gauge! Dont let it drop below 60 and never feed him when it's cold like no heat balb on he can bloat and die. He needs heat to warm up and digest food.. never ever house them togeather they will fight one another very dangerous and inhumane

This is a great video. There are a MILLION different "ways" to care for an animal. In short, provide the right materials and then alter the habitat to fit the reptiles needs. Stan is an excellent example. I had a blind beta fish and a large tank was too much, so I made it smaller for him and he thrived. All depends on the animal.

Hey can you make a video/explain to me why my bearded dragon eats on some days, and some days he doesn’t want to eat at all- as in he goes 2 / 3 days without eating, then he eats the days afterwards n so on- is this normal? And he mostly eats super worms and mealworms, he doesn’t really eat his veggies, and if he does it’s rare. I’ve only had him for about just over a month - nearly 2 - and he seems to be a perfect weight.

Meal worms can be hard to digest and super worms are pretty much addictive to the point some dragons refuse to eat anything else

People are always so quick to criticize. And it's usually when they don't know the whole situation. I got a box turtle from a rescue. She is missing her toes, all of them, because they were eating off by mites at her previous home. I've made her an indoor enclosure and an outdoor enclosure but I went through and took out most of the rocks so that she would have softer ground to walk on.

Hey guys, I need some advice. I just got a baby bearded dragon (not sure of his age) and he seems pretty happy as of the moment but I’m worried about the bedding. I’m using critter comfort bedding. The store I bought it from said that since it’s made of coconut fibres it will be easily digested but what I’ve read online has said differently. Does anyone know if this will cause impact ion for the bearded dragon? All advice is helpful. Thanks

My crested gecko got out and ate a bunch of hair. I removed a matted hair clump from his mouth. There’s no way he could have passed it. I worry I hurt his internal organs when I removed it because I didn’t even know it was there.

So with limited mobility and not able to use his feet, you chose to use a slippery and no grip surface for him? Alright.

Are sticky tiles always ok for a bearded dragon enclosure? I’ve heard that the adhesive can give off toxins when too hot but if that’s a myth it would be nice to know cause I wanna use them in my beardies tank

Wouldn't a soft surface help relieve pressure on his limbs when he walks kinda like wearing slippers on tile flooring when your feet hurt

I have a female leopard gecko that I rescued from a pet shop. It was kept in a 40x40x30cm tank with three other geckos. The girl was smaller then the other two geckos who apparently didn’t give her a chance to eat when they were all fed. They also had a 50W or stronger heat lamp in their tank and only two hides. When my friend who worked at the shop told me that they have a sick underweight gecko that’s refusing to eat and no one wants to buy it I agreed to take it home. When I got her, she weighed 18g, was missing four toes and one nail on her front paws that she lost due to a bad shedding, her skin was burned and dry due to the strong lamp. I also found out why she wasn’t eating. She had a broken jaw. Now, after dozens of vet visits, five months of feeding her out of a syringe and a lot of patience she’s gonna be turning two years in three months. I’ve decided to keep her and I named her Sally Face, my tiny friend and companion in life that I love more than anything else. edit: she also hates and is scared of crickets and often runs away from them as fast as possible to hide in her hideout.

Do you have a great resource for beardie care? We are looking for an adolescent male and while we have had one before you do things differently than we were taught and I just want to make sure we do the best for him

One of my bearded dragons named Tiger has muscular dystrophy and we keep her in a 20 gallon tank because she has a lot of trouble moving around. I also hand feed to make sure she eats. because I have seen bearded dragon like her that are very skinny because they have trouble eating.

I appreciate you making this video. People have commented on my bearded dragons enclosure saying it is boring and sterile, even calling it cruel. But my dragon is ADV+ and also blind in one eye, so his enclosure is best adapted to his needs. It may not be aesthetic, but mimicking a "natural" environment is not ideal or practical for every animal.

This makes me think of Grim, my 3 year old beardy. He's a very healthy boy but he gains the nickname trouble for his ability to get into places I didn’t even know where possible for him. But also reminds me how he spends 90% of his time running around the house instead of the large enclose we got him.

My leopard gecko really likes to climb up on things. A lot of people say to not put things that are too high up in a Leo's enclosure, but I got one of those tall suction cup bridges that takes him nearly to the top of his cage and he absolutely loves it. Every animal is different!

I keep my cat in my room. She’s around 17 years old and if I leave my door open my sister’s dogs come in and she’ll hide in the closet all week. This way she’s got my room all to herself. She still plays and her health has improved by miles since I saved her from the cold. She’s also a good beggar with a very sensitive tummy. I’ve gotten her at a healthy weight and she keeps most of her food down unless she eats too fast. I take her out of my room all the time, but late at night cuz I work nights so she does get time to explore. She usually sticks to my side and is very lovable. I too wouldn’t recommend my care for just any cat. So I can totally understand that custom care that makes the animal most happy and healthy might not always look like the best possible care. But as long as you can tell you’re getting better results then I’d say you’re probably doing something right.

Stan is a legend and I love him. also, not a herp but we had to close the door the the upstairs bathroom in our house or else our cat would go sing in there. He wouldn't sing in the downstairs bathroom, just the upstairs. So I guess that's a special thing we had to do.

What do you suggest for a bearded dragon that has to be hand fed? My daughter hand feeds her dragon and he doesn't show any interest anymore in eating on his own. What can we do?
